Is Americas Most Segregated City In New York State?

A quick look at contemporary American history might leave one thinking that the South was a bastion of racism and segregation with its long history of slavery, while the North was the shining city on the hill. However, someone doesn't need to go far around Northern states like New York to see exactly how untrue that is.

Some of the most segregated and redlined cities in America are located in the north and that includes the great city of Buffalo, where schools were still segregated within my lifetime.

Knowing this, it is still a tad bit surprising to learn that perhaps the most segregated city in the entire United States of America is located right here in the Empire State.

According to data analyzed by The University of Richmond, Rochester Institute of Technology, EdBuild, and the Empire Justice Center, that distinction may belong to the Flower City itself.

Most people in Upstate New York graduated from very small school districts. I know I did, 308 students. But what about those in the larger cities?

Here is a list of the dozen largest school districts in Upstate New York. For those of us from small rural schools, it is mind-boggling to imagine graduating from a school with 10,000, 20,000 and even 40,000 students in the district like some of those on this list did.
